Tots on Tour Car seat safety

We drove to Jack’s Point with the kids today with the new car seat laws in force.

About five children are killed or injured every week in road accidents in New Zealand.

The age increase from 5 years old aligns New Zealand with the rules in Australia and Japan.

It is now mandatory for children travelling in a motor vehicle to be in a car seat or booster seat until they are 7 years old.

Children aged between 7 and 8 years are also required to be in a child restraint if there is one in the vehicle.

Adult seatbelts are designed for adults – they don’t fit children properly until they are at least 148cm tall. Car seats boost the height of a child so the seat belt fits them across the chest and hips correctly. Without a booster seat, an adult seatbelt sits too high on a child. The lap part of the belt rides up over their tummy and the sash part lies across the neck.

In a crash, this can result in serious head and spinal cord injuries and horrific injuries to the abdomen, including ruptured livers and spleens.

What booster seats do is raise children up and position them so that they get the full safety benefit of the adult seatbelt.

Please read our blog on Car Seats for more information.

Safekids New Zealand is also running a national public awareness campaign for booster seats. Information and resources for parents and caregivers can be found on their website.
